The Challenge
Young Naturopathic Center for Wellness offered compounding pharmacy products to their patients through a third-party pharmacy system. The pharmacy handled payments, fulfillment, and compliance, but the clinic had no streamlined way to get patients to the right product.
Staff were manually sending individual pharmacy links to patients one at a time. Each product had multiple formulations, dosages, and strengths, and each combination had its own unique link. For a growing clinic with an expanding product catalog, this was unsustainable.
They needed a system that could:
- Let patients browse products by category (e.g., weight loss, anti-aging)
- Display product variants (dose, strength, formulation) clearly
- Route each selection to the correct third-party pharmacy link
- Look and feel like a real e-commerce experience without actually processing payments on-site
- Lay the groundwork for a product catalog that can grow over time
- Work within the constraints of their existing (and aging) WordPress installation

Our Approach
Discovery and Planning
The initial brief made one thing clear: the client wanted something that felt like WooCommerce to the end user, but without the overhead of a full e-commerce plugin. WooCommerce would have added unnecessary bloat, slowed the site down, and introduced features (cart, checkout, payment processing) that weren’t needed since the pharmacy handled all of that.
We also had to work within an older WordPress theme that had its own quirks and limitations. New pages were being built inside a visual editor tied to a theme with hardcoded styles and class-based formatting, which made flexibility a challenge.
Design in Figma
Before touching any code, we designed every screen and step in Figma:
- Category page layout with educational copy up top, followed by a product grid
- Product cards featuring medication images, names, short descriptions, and clear “View More” buttons
- Product pages with variant selectors (dose, strength, quantity) and pricing that updated dynamically
- A “How It Works” section to set patient expectations around the ordering and clinical review process
The design drew inspiration from established pharmacy and supplement e-commerce sites, but was tailored to match the clinic’s existing brand.

Custom WordPress Development
Rather than installing WooCommerce or a product catalog plugin, we built a lightweight custom solution directly into the WordPress theme. This gave us full control over performance and presentation without plugin dependency.
What we built:
- Custom post type for products with fields for name, description, image, category, and an array of variants
- Variant data structure storing dose, strength, price, and the corresponding third-party pharmacy URL for each option
- Category archive templates that pulled products by category and displayed them in a clean, responsive grid
- Single product templates with a variant selector UI that revealed the correct price and “Buy Now” link based on the patient’s selection
- SEO-friendly architecture so each product and category page could be optimized with proper titles, meta descriptions, and structured content
The “Buy Now” button didn’t trigger an on-site checkout. It simply opened the exact pharmacy link for that specific product variant in a new tab. From the patient’s perspective, one click took them straight to the right pharmacy page. From the clinic’s perspective, it eliminated hours of manual link-sharing.

The Result
The clinic now has a fully functional product browsing experience that:
- Customer expansion from Los Gatos, CA (32,000 population) to the whole of California (39,000,000).
- Reduction in manual admin by approximately 5 hours per week.
- Automates patient onboarding to pharmacy products without staff intervention
- Scales easily as new products, categories, or formulations are added
- Performs well since there’s no WooCommerce or heavy plugin overhead
- Supports SEO with proper page structure and builds trust with clients due to the professional look
The system also lays the foundation for future enhancements like quiz-based product recommendation (using Gravity Forms to guide patients to the right formulation) and expanded product categories beyond weight loss.

Key Takeaways
You don’t always need WooCommerce. For clinics and healthcare providers working with third-party fulfillment, a custom lightweight product catalog can deliver the same user experience without the bloat, cost, or complexity.
Design before development saves time and money. The Figma process meant the client could approve the look, feel, and user flow before a single line of code was written. No surprises, no expensive revisions.
Legacy WordPress sites aren’t a dead end. Even with an older theme and existing constraints, custom development can add modern functionality without a full site rebuild.
